Are you all excited for our next DIY project? Okay then, today we are going to learn an ancient form of art “block printing”. Its super easy and can be a craft idea for your kids as well. Let’s have a look at it…

Actually I should call it, wooden block printing! Its one of the techniques used to print designs on cloth. Though it was originated in China, it’s a popular form of art printing in India as well. Though I’ve never ever used it in my life, am getting attracted towards it now!

Now comes the wooden block, this is how it looks. Carvings are made on small pieces of blocks of wood using tools and equipment by the artisans and the outcome in right here. Yes, you can easily find these blocks in the market and if you find it troublesome, search for every day objects for beautiful graphics on fabrics and papers.

Here is an image of Vidhi wearing one of the Cotton Mull printed Bagh saree, prints are a mixture of various tribal wooden blocks, tribe weaves of Dhar district, a work done by women’s of SAI, SHG (Self Help Group, MP). Looks pretty to me!

Now, let us take a closer look of the prints that has been used on the saree that she is wearing. The fabric used here is pure cotton but wooden blocks can be used to leave impressions on other fabrics as well.

This is the border of the saree, designs are imprinted using wooden blocks, colors may vary according to your choice. Usually organic colors are used for printing but you can make your choice of colors that won’t wash off easily.

Now, the final look of the saree. Oh, this has made me fall in love with this ancient printing technique. It’s an amazing fine piece of art with carvings on wood done by the artisans.

Why are we talking only about block printing on fabrics, you can use wooden blocks to make cards for your loved ones. The process of block printing on paper (as shown in the image below) remains the same as we follow while printing on fabrics. Only the thing is you don’t need to wash-off your paper. :P
